Reporting category 2: find and fix an error in a short text. On the real test some of these are typed answers or sentence rewrites. Here they are multiple choice so they can be checked.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Jamal and [me] finished the science poster on time. Which word should replace the underlined word?

  • ICorrect answer
  • him
  • us
  • myself

Why “I” is correct

This tests subject pronouns. "Jamal and ___" is the subject of the sentence, so it needs a subject pronoun: I. A simple trick is to take out "Jamal and" and listen: "I finished the poster" sounds right, and "Me finished the poster" does not.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • him — "Him" is an object pronoun, the same kind of mistake as "me" here.
  • us — "Us" is an object pronoun and also means more than one person.
  • myself — "Myself" is used only when the same person is both doing and receiving the action.
