The question
Choose the best answer.
Read the sentence. The underlined words have an error. Where [you are] going after school? Which choice should replace the underlined words?
- you is
- are youCorrect answer
- is you
- you were
Why “are you” is correct
This tests word order in a question. In English, a question that starts with a question word (where, what, why) puts the helping verb before the subject: "Where are you going?" Many languages keep the same order as a statement, so this is a very common error for English learners.
Why the other answers are wrong
- you is — This keeps the wrong order and also uses the wrong verb with "you."
- is you — "Is" does not go with "you." We say "you are," never "you is."
- you were — This keeps the statement word order, and it changes the tense.
