Ms. Martinez: Before we start the lab, everyone needs goggles. Take a pair from the box on the back counter, not the ones in the plastic bags by the sink. Those still need to be cleaned.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Which goggles should the students use?

  • A pair from the plastic bags by the sink
  • A pair from the box on the back counterCorrect answer
  • A pair they bring from home
  • A pair from the box beside the sink

Why “A pair from the box on the back counter” is correct

This tests following a spoken direction that includes a "not" part. The teacher names two places and rules one out: use the box on the back counter, "not the ones in the plastic bags by the sink." Students who catch only the last place named may choose the wrong pair.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A pair from the plastic bags by the sink — Ms. Martinez says not to use these because they still need to be cleaned.
  • A pair they bring from home — Nothing is said about goggles from home.
  • A pair from the box beside the sink — The box is on the back counter; the plastic bags are the ones by the sink.
