Mr. Harris: Find Lubbock on your map of Texas. Draw a circle around it. Then draw a small star just below the circle. Be careful: the star goes underneath the circle, not inside it.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Which picture shows what Mr. Harris asked for?
- A circle around Lubbock with a small star inside it
- A circle around Lubbock with a small star drawn just above it
- A star on Lubbock with a small circle under the star
- A circle around Lubbock with a small star under the circleCorrect answer
Why “A circle around Lubbock with a small star under the circle” is correct
This tests position words in a spoken direction: around, below, underneath and inside. All four choices use the same two shapes, so the student has to listen for exactly where each one goes. Mr. Harris's final warning ("not inside it") rules out one tempting choice.
Why the other answers are wrong
- A circle around Lubbock with a small star inside it — Mr. Harris specifically says the star goes underneath the circle, not inside it.
- A circle around Lubbock with a small star drawn just above it — The star goes below the circle, not above it.
- A star on Lubbock with a small circle under the star — This switches the two shapes: the circle goes around Lubbock and the star goes below it.
