Isabel: Tyler, our presentation on saving water is on Friday, and we still haven't decided who's doing what.
Tyler: I was thinking I'd make the slides. I already found a chart that shows how much water a family uses in one day.
Isabel: Good. Where does most of it go?
Tyler: Showers and toilets, mostly. Watering the lawn is a big one in the summer, too.
Isabel: Then I'll write the part about things people can actually do at home, like taking shorter showers, and watering the yard early in the morning, when it's cooler, so less of the water dries up before it soaks in.
Tyler: What about the interview? Ms. Delgado said we need one real person as a source, not just websites.
Isabel: My aunt works for the city water department. I can call her tonight.
Tyler: Perfect. But she might be busy, and we need the interview done by Wednesday. I'll talk to Coach Bryant tomorrow, just in case. He takes care of the football field, so he must know a lot about watering grass.
Isabel: That's true. Let's meet in the library on Thursday at lunch and practice the whole thing once.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Why does Tyler plan to talk to Coach Bryant?
- In case Isabel's aunt cannot do the interview in timeCorrect answer
- Because Isabel's aunt does not know about water
- Because Ms. Delgado told them they had to interview a coach
- Because Coach Bryant made the water chart
Why “In case Isabel's aunt cannot do the interview in time” is correct
This asks the student to understand a speaker's reason when it is only partly stated. Tyler says the aunt "might be busy," the interview must be done by Wednesday, and he will talk to the coach "just in case." Together these show that the coach is a backup plan.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Because Isabel's aunt does not know about water — Her aunt works for the city water department, so she would know a lot.
- Because Ms. Delgado told them they had to interview a coach — Ms. Delgado said they need a real person as a source, but she did not say who.
- Because Coach Bryant made the water chart — Tyler found the chart; it has nothing to do with Coach Bryant.
