Deshawn: Ms. Sanchez, I was absent on Monday because I had a dentist appointment. Can I still take the vocabulary quiz?

Ms. Sanchez: Yes. You can take it during advisory on Wednesday, or after school on Thursday in my room.

Deshawn: I have soccer practice after school on Thursday. So I'll do the other time. But I never got the word list.

Ms. Sanchez: It's posted online, but here's a paper copy. Spend most of your time on the words with stars next to them. Those are the ones on this quiz. The rest are for next week.

Deshawn: Okay. Thank you, Ms. Sanchez.

The question

Choose the best answer.

When will Deshawn most likely take the quiz?

  • On Monday, with the class
  • Before school on Friday
  • During advisory on WednesdayCorrect answer
  • After school on Thursday

Why “During advisory on Wednesday” is correct

This tests following a choice made indirectly. Ms. Sanchez offers two times, and Deshawn rules one out (soccer on Thursday) and says, "I'll do the other time," without naming it. The student has to work out that "the other time" means Wednesday during advisory.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • On Monday, with the class — He was absent on Monday, which is why he missed the quiz.
  • Before school on Friday — Friday is never offered as a time.
  • After school on Thursday — Deshawn has soccer practice after school on Thursday.
