Deshawn: Ms. Sanchez, I was absent on Monday because I had a dentist appointment. Can I still take the vocabulary quiz?

Ms. Sanchez: Yes. You can take it during advisory on Wednesday, or after school on Thursday in my room.

Deshawn: I have soccer practice after school on Thursday. So I'll do the other time. But I never got the word list.

Ms. Sanchez: It's posted online, but here's a paper copy. Spend most of your time on the words with stars next to them. Those are the ones on this quiz. The rest are for next week.

Deshawn: Okay. Thank you, Ms. Sanchez.

Choose the best answer.

What does Ms. Sanchez say about the words with stars?

  • They are the words on this quiz.Correct answer
  • They are only posted online.
  • They were on last week's quiz.
  • They are the hardest words on the list.

Why “They are the words on this quiz.” is correct

This tests a detail in the teacher's instructions. Ms. Sanchez says the starred words "are the ones on this quiz" and the rest are for next week. Students should notice that she contrasts the two groups of words.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • They are only posted online. — She gives Deshawn a paper copy of the same list.
  • They were on last week's quiz. — The other words are for next week; nothing is said about last week.
  • They are the hardest words on the list. — She says nothing about how difficult the words are.
