Reporting category 1: work out what words and phrases mean from context, and understand how sentences and word forms work.
The question
Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.
The museum guide spoke with great ______ about the history of the old Spanish mission.
- enthusiastic
- enthusiasmCorrect answer
- enthusiastically
- enthuse
Why “enthusiasm” is correct
This tests word forms. The phrase "with great ___" needs a noun, the thing the guide showed. All four choices come from the same root, so the student has to recognize the noun ending -asm. Similar phrases include "with great care" and "with great skill."
Why the other answers are wrong
- enthusiastic — "Enthusiastic" is an adjective; after "great," the sentence needs a noun.
- enthusiastically — "Enthusiastically" is an adverb and cannot follow "with great."
- enthuse — "Enthuse" is a verb and does not fit after "great."
