Rehearsal Update
From: Mr. Abernathy
To: Cast and Crew of The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter
Subject: Rehearsal changes for the next two weeks
Cast and Crew,
Opening night is two weeks away, so our rehearsal schedule is changing. Starting Monday, rehearsals on Monday through Thursday will end at 6:00 p.m. instead of 5:00 p.m. Please ask a parent or guardian to plan for the later pickup.
By this Friday, all actors must know their lines without a script. On Friday, we will run the whole play from beginning to end. Anyone who still needs a script will sit out and study while another student reads the part.
Costume fittings will be on Wednesday during lunch in Room 112. If you cannot be there, tell Ms. Chen, our costume designer, by Tuesday.
See you on stage,
Mr. Abernathy
The question
Choose the best answer.
Why does Mr. Abernathy explain what will happen on Friday to actors who still need a script?
- To give actors more time to read their scripts
- To announce that the play has been canceled
- To push actors to learn their lines this weekCorrect answer
- To explain how costumes will be chosen
Why “To push actors to learn their lines this week” is correct
This asks about a writer's purpose. Mr. Abernathy says actors who still need a script "will sit out" while someone else reads the part. No actor wants that, so describing it encourages everyone to learn their lines on time. The email never says "this is a warning," so the student has to infer it.
Why the other answers are wrong
- To give actors more time to read their scripts — He wants them to stop using scripts by Friday.
- To announce that the play has been canceled — Opening night is still two weeks away.
- To explain how costumes will be chosen — Costumes are a separate part of the email.
