Coach Miller: Line up on the baseline, facing the other basket. When I blow the whistle, sprint to the free-throw line, touch it with your hand, and then backpedal to the baseline. Keep your eyes on me the whole time.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What will the players do after they touch the free-throw line?
- Turn around and sprint to the far basket
- Move backward to where they startedCorrect answer
- Shoot a free throw and wait for the coach
- Stop and wait for a second whistle
Why “Move backward to where they started” is correct
This tests the meaning of a sports word, "backpedal," and the order of steps in a spoken direction. To backpedal is to move backward while still facing forward. The coach's last sentence, "Keep your eyes on me," also supports moving backward without turning.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Turn around and sprint to the far basket — They return to the baseline, and they do not turn around.
- Shoot a free throw and wait for the coach — No shooting is mentioned in the drill.
- Stop and wait for a second whistle — The coach describes one continuous drill after one whistle.
