Jasmine: Abuela's seventieth birthday is in three weeks, and I still don't know what to give her. She always says she doesn't need anything.

Adrian: What about a video? We could ask everyone in the family to record a short message about a favorite memory with her.

Jasmine: I love that. But half the family lives in Monterrey, and Tío Tony never answers his phone.

Adrian: He always answers our cousin Veronica, though. She lives right down the street from him. We could ask her to collect the videos from everyone over there and send them to us.

Jasmine: Okay. And I'll ask everyone to keep their message under one minute. Otherwise the video will be an hour long.

Adrian: Good idea. I'll put it all together on the laptop. You make the list of who we still need to ask. And remind everybody that it's a surprise.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Adrian suggest asking their cousin Veronica for help?

  • She is good at making videos.
  • She can reach relatives they cannot.Correct answer
  • She has the best memories of Abuela.
  • She can keep the gift a secret.

Why “She can reach relatives they cannot.” is correct

This question asks the student to connect two statements. Jasmine says Tío Tony never answers his phone, and Adrian replies that Tío Tony always answers Veronica, who lives near the family in Monterrey. The speakers never say "because," so the listener has to work out the reason.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She is good at making videos. — Adrian will make the video himself.
  • She has the best memories of Abuela. — Her memories are never mentioned.
  • She can keep the gift a secret. — Keeping it a surprise is for everyone, not a reason to choose Veronica.
