Coach Rivera: You all ran hard and passed the ball to each other today. That was great teamwork. Give yourselves a hand!

The question

Choose the best answer.

The coach says, "Give yourselves a hand!" What does the coach want the team to do?

  • Hold hands in a circle
  • Clap for themselvesCorrect answer
  • Raise their hands
  • Wash their hands

Why “Clap for themselves” is correct

"Give yourselves a hand" is an everyday expression that means "clap for yourselves." The words do not mean what they say one by one, so a student who translates word for word may pick a choice about hands. The coach's praise just before it ("great teamwork") is the clue that this is about celebrating.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Hold hands in a circle — This takes the word "hand" literally. The coach is praising the team, not asking them to make a circle.
  • Raise their hands — Raising hands is for answering a question. The coach did not ask one.
  • Wash their hands — Washing hands has nothing to do with praising the team.
