Henry: Oh no. The tip of my pencil just broke, and I still have five spelling words to write.

Sofia: Here, you can use my other one. I always keep two in my box.

Henry: Thanks, Sofia! I'll give it back after spelling.

Sofia: Okay. And if you need help with a hard word, just ask me.

Choose the best answer.

What can you tell about Sofia?

  • She is upset with Henry.
  • She does not like spelling.
  • She likes to help her friends.Correct answer
  • She wants a new pencil.

Why “She likes to help her friends.” is correct

No one says "Sofia is helpful," so the student has to decide what her actions show. She lends a pencil and offers help with hard words, which tells us she likes to help. Ask the student, "What did Sofia do?" and then, "What kind of friend does that?"

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She is upset with Henry. — Sofia is friendly to Henry. She shares and offers more help.
  • She does not like spelling. — Sofia offers to help with spelling words, so nothing shows she dislikes spelling.
  • She wants a new pencil. — Sofia already has two pencils and gives one away.
