Ms. Tran: When you stand outside on a sunny day, your body blocks some of the sunlight. That makes a dark shape on the ground. We call it a shadow.

Ms. Tran: Your shadow changes during the day. In the early morning, when the sun is low, your shadow is long.

Ms. Tran: At noon, the sun is high in the sky, and your shadow is short. In the late afternoon, the sun is low again, and your shadow gets long again.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What makes a shadow?

  • Rain falling down on the ground
  • Your body blocking sunlightCorrect answer
  • The sun going to sleep
  • Clouds moving in the sky

Why “Your body blocking sunlight” is correct

Ms. Tran explains that a shadow is made when your body blocks some of the sunlight. This checks that the student understood the main idea of the first part of the lesson. The wrong choices are about weather or night, which the lesson does not connect to shadows.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Rain falling down on the ground — Rain is not part of the lesson. Shadows happen on sunny days.
  • The sun going to sleep — The lesson is about a sunny day. When the sun is gone, there is no sunlight to block.
  • Clouds moving in the sky — The lesson does not talk about clouds.
