Darnell: I wanted a book about sharks, but the shelf is empty. Other kids took them all.

Valeria: What about this one? It's about whales. Whales live in the ocean too, and they're even bigger than sharks.

Darnell: Wow, look at that picture. Okay, I'll try it.

Valeria: And next week you can ask Ms. Patel to save a shark book for you.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Valeria show Darnell a book about whales?

  • She wants him to give it to Ms. Patel.
  • She thinks sharks are scary.
  • He might like a different ocean animal.Correct answer
  • It is the only book left in the library.

Why “He might like a different ocean animal.” is correct

Valeria gives a clue to her reason when she says whales live in the ocean too and are even bigger than sharks. The student has to work out that she is choosing something close to what Darnell wanted. Understanding why a speaker says something is part of the analyze category.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She wants him to give it to Ms. Patel. — Ms. Patel is mentioned as someone who could save a shark book, not someone to give the whale book to.
  • She thinks sharks are scary. — Valeria never says sharks are scary.
  • It is the only book left in the library. — Only the shark shelf is empty. Nothing says the whole library is.
