Darnell: I wanted a book about sharks, but the shelf is empty. Other kids took them all.
Valeria: What about this one? It's about whales. Whales live in the ocean too, and they're even bigger than sharks.
Darnell: Wow, look at that picture. Okay, I'll try it.
Valeria: And next week you can ask Ms. Patel to save a shark book for you.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What does Darnell decide to do?
- Wait for a shark book
- Read the whale bookCorrect answer
- Leave the library
- Look for a different shark book
Why “Read the whale book” is correct
Darnell says, "Okay, I'll try it," right after Valeria shows him the whale book. The student needs to know that "it" means the whale book. Following what a pronoun refers to in conversation is a key skill at this level.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Wait for a shark book — Valeria suggests asking for a shark book next week, but Darnell decides to try the whale book now.
- Leave the library — Darnell decides to try a book, so he is not leaving without one.
- Look for a different shark book — The shark books are all gone, so there are none to look for.
