The question

Choose the best answer.

Why did Daniel's mom write this note?

  • To say Daniel is sick and will miss school today
  • To tell the teacher Daniel will leave earlyCorrect answer
  • To ask for Daniel's homework
  • To thank Ms. Ramos for a party

Why “To tell the teacher Daniel will leave early” is correct

The note says Mrs. Ortega will come to get Daniel at 1:00 for a dentist visit. School does not end at 1:00, so the purpose is to tell the teacher he will leave early. Working out why someone wrote a text is an author's purpose question.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • To say Daniel is sick and will miss school today — The note says Daniel has a dentist visit, not that he is sick.
  • To ask for Daniel's homework — The note does not ask for homework.
  • To thank Ms. Ramos for a party — "Thank you" is only how the note ends. There is no party.
