Dear Tía Rosa,

Thank you for the book about dinosaurs. I read it every night before bed. My favorite part is the page about the dinosaurs with long necks. Please come visit soon so I can read it to you!

Love, Pablo

The question

Choose the best answer.

Read this sentence from the note. I read it every night before bed. What does it mean in this sentence?

  • The dinosaur bookCorrect answer
  • The note to Tía Rosa
  • The bed
  • The visit

Why “The dinosaur book” is correct

The word it points back to something named before. The sentence right before is about the book about dinosaurs, and you read a book. Working out what words like it, they and him stand for is part of understanding how sentences fit together.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The note to Tía Rosa — Pablo is writing the note now. He reads the book every night.
  • The bed — Bed is in the same sentence, but you do not read a bed.
  • The visit — The visit is mentioned later and has not happened yet.
