The question
Choose the best answer.
Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Last night my family [eated] pizza. Which word should replace the underlined word?
- ateCorrect answer
- eat
- eating
- eats
Why “ate” is correct
Some verbs do not add -ed in the past. They change in a special way: eat becomes ate, go becomes went, run becomes ran. "Eated" shows the student knows the -ed rule but has not yet learned this irregular verb, which is a normal step in learning English.
Why the other answers are wrong
- eat — Eat is for now or every day. "Last night" needs the past tense.
- eating — "My family eating" is missing a helping word and does not show the past.
- eats — Eats is for every day, not for last night.
