Gloria's grandpa grows tomatoes in his backyard.

Every morning before school, Gloria fills the watering can and helps him water the plants.

For a long time, the tomatoes were small and green. Then one morning, Gloria saw that they were big and red.

"Are they ready now?" she asked. Grandpa smiled and handed her a basket.

That night, they made salsa together for dinner.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Grandpa hand Gloria a basket?

  • The tomatoes are ready to pick.Correct answer
  • She needs to carry the watering can.
  • He wants her to take her lunch.
  • The tomatoes are still green.

Why “The tomatoes are ready to pick.” is correct

Grandpa does not say "yes"; he answers Gloria's question by smiling and handing her a basket. The student has to understand that the basket means "yes, you can pick them now." Understanding an answer that is shown, not said, is an inference.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She needs to carry the watering can. — A watering can is carried by its handle. The basket is for something else.
  • He wants her to take her lunch. — Lunch is not part of the story.
  • The tomatoes are still green. — At this point the tomatoes are big and red, not green.
